“Ping!” went the Brown Sugar Café bell and Lucy ran to take
an order. Lucy was an ordinary teenager. She had ocean sky eyes, silk blond
hair and shiny red lips.
The café phone rang. It was for Lucy. She took hold of the
phone and listened to a man from the hospital, “Quick! Your dad has been hurt.
Come now!” Lucy dropped the phone and ran out of the café. Throwing off her
apron, she jumped on her bike and sped away to the hospital.
When Lucy got there, one of the receptionists told her what
was wrong with her dad. He had been cliff climbing and fell and hit his head.
Now he was in a coma. As soon as Lucy heard, she couldn’t breathe. It was like
she was winded. What would she do? What could she do? She walked out and no-one
really knew why. Then Lucy just ran and didn’t stop.
Lucy ran over a field and fell over crying. Then she heard a
rustle. A dog jumped out at her. It was a stray dog with white and brown fur. She
was happier now she had someone with her. She said she would call him Jay and
as Lucy got up to walk, Jay walked beside her, until they reached a pond. The
pond was misty and infested with bugs. It was obviously old. The wind brushing
against her, she felt that she could just be swept off with the wind. Jay
followed Lucy back to the café. Jay settled down in a corner eating some food
Lucy found for him. Everyone was wondering about what had happened.
A few hours had passed and a strange lady came in and sat at
a table next to the window. She remained there for the afternoon, staring out of
the window or at Lucy. As soon as the lady left, there was a little white box
with red ribbon on the table. Lucy went to clear the table. She opened it and inside
was a flower. It seemed there was spilled sugar on the table. Lucy couldn’t quite
figure out the shape that had been drawn in the sugar so cleared it up. This
happened every day for the rest of the week until Lucy went up to the strange
lady and asked why she left the strange gifts. She said that Lucy and Jay should
meet her at the pond that night. They went
and met the lady there. The lady said, “This might sound strange but I am your
guardian angel, but you can’t tell anyone!” Lucy replied, “Why are you here?”
The lady explained that everyone has a guardian angel and she was there to help
Lucy, leaving gifts and messages in the sugar.
“Go back to the hospital as your dad will be fine.” Lucy
didn’t believe this. When she turned to go, Jay stayed with the lady. When Lucy
arrived at the hospital reception, she found out that it was true.
